Given the current environment, capabilities that address
medical cost trends and improve outcomes in a consumer-centric and
provider-friendly manner are now a strategic imperative for all
industry players—including employers.
Employers have grown increasingly frustrated over the years by rising medical costs and patient safety. Following the landmark study, “To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System” published by the Institute of Medicine in 1999, the U.S. Business Roundtable created the Leapfrog Group, whose name has become synonymous with patient safety. Two key Leapfrog Group recommendations for industry-wide safety standards are seeing increasing attention and success: computerized provider order entry (CPOE) and evidence-based medicine for referrals, which is synonymous with the Sage HMS value proposition.
